A minimum of 13 people lose their lives and ninety-eight wounded in train crash in Mexico.
A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship government projects.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” declared the head of state.
The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's developmental vision for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The building of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in public projects. They were built at an rapid speed, surpassing expectations to be partially opened before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked ongoing concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a primary political opposition demanded an immediate suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This halt was requested until the completion of a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."
In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been operating in total adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and management of these vital projects.
